Final Project  - presentation

Objectives: 

-          To reinforce your knowledge gained from the class lectures and exercises.

-          To provide experience in presenting and articulating a subject that you find interesting.

-          To share with the class the results of your research!!

 

Description of the assignment:

Select a topic that you would like to research and present to the class in a 10 minute presentation.  The following suggestions are below.  If you have another topic that you are interested in (that is relevant to the course), please discuss this with me so we can see how it may fit.

 

Topics:

-          Overview of Troubleshooting – what are some techniques and things you should consider when trying to solve a problem.  What tools are available?

-          Overview of computer security describe the various methods of locking down systems and precautions that should be taken to minimize security risks.

-          Overview of AMD vs. Intel – a description of each and why you may choose one over the other.  What would you recommend, and in what situations?

-          Overview of Windows vs. Linux – a description of each and why you may choose one over the other.  What would you recommend, and in what situations?

-          Overview of the various “flavors” of Linux – a description of each and why you may choose one over the other.  What would you recommend, and in what situations?

-          Spyware and Adware – what is it, how to avoid it, and how to eliminate it.  Also, what are the trends in this area and the future of the problem.

-          Viruses– a description of the various types, how to avoid them, and how to eliminate them.  Also, what are the trends in this area and the future of the problem.

-          Open source software – a description of it and some examples of it.  Also, what is the trend for companies to use this, and why?

-          Virtualization – an overview of running various operating systems concurrently within a particular hardware platform.  Include a description of the architecture and products, including VMWare Workstation and Server.


 

Deliverables with important dates:

 

-          April 2: select your topic by this date – please notify me by then at the latest.

-          April 16:

-          Hand in a report (2 page single spaced) – OR – a Power Point Presentation (minimum 20 slides) – please provide BOTH a printed copy AND email me an electronic copy. (50 points, see Rubric below)

-          Give your presentation, using Power Point (or other computerized display program) if you would like.  The projector will be available. (50 points, see Rubric below).

 

Important:  all work utilized must be referenced / sited, whether the source is the Internet or textbooks.  Include a Bibliography at the end of your report or on the last page of your Powerpoint presentation.

Grading Aspect

Level 1: 0-10 points

Level 2: 11-20 points

Level 3: 21-25 points

Organization

Difficult to follow and understand.

Some aspects could use further clarification.

Easy to understand points that were made in the document

Document / Powerpoint: Accuracy

Several inaccuracies were found in the work.

The work was generally good, but at least one inaccuracy was found.

All work was found to be correct from the standpoint of accuracy.

Presentation: skills

Difficult to understand (spoke quietly).  Little energy.  Didn’t encourage questions.

Parts of the presentation were hard to understand.  Some energy.

Enthusiastic!  Spoke clearly. Maintained eye contact.  Put energy into the presentation.  Encouraged questions.

Presentation: Knowledge of the topic

Student didn’t appear to have a clear understanding of the topics presented.

Student had some understanding, however they didn’t add much beyond what was found in their research.

As presenter, the student was well informed of the topic.  Student had their own opinions towards their topic.
